7.5 Month Test

When I was younger, I found this stove while digging, and frankly, never looked it up. I really enjoyed it, so when I started my ultralight thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, I chose it — knowing nothing of its history. I took the stove all 2,192 miles, in 2019.
Here's the honest:
I started in February, and my year got temps between 9 and 110°F. My first true frustration came at Blood Mountain. The vendor had added water to the alcohol, and in the cold weather, it could never prime well. I did envy the ease of canister stoves. However, that's not the fault of the stove.
What I did enjoy was a trade-off: filling the stove, placing it into the heart of wet kindling, and retrieving it in the morning when the fire was done. That's the honest trade. It's so light, it looks cool, its use is versatile, you can't break it.
The human part of people adding water happened more than once on trail. I switched to using Quick Heat fuel line cleaner. So… the stove gets a 5 in my book... But sourcing fuel is clutch. so that you're not .)

5 for ULTRA-LIGHTIING. ...if you're going. car camping... this stove will frustrate you- stop as the gas station, buy some logs of wood.

Simple, easy, lightweight

Love the simplicity and heat output. Boiled half a liter in 6 min in a titanium GSI mug. Still had fuel left over. Priming takes up to 3 min then excellent flame and heat. First time lighting it was slow and disappointing but I think it just needed to be fired up once to clear out burner holes. Has worked excellent since then.

Tested it at home. Worked great. Haven’t tested in the field yet but sure it will work well.

Have used it a few times. Very happy with it. Look forward to further use on the trail. Really like the no moving parts simplicity of the design. Makes it kind of bullet proof design.

Only thing that I can see is the long priming phase. Seems like it takes longer than others. Have not done a stop watch test though.

The first time I used the stove, I didn't fill it to the top and got poor performance. When i filled it to the top with 1 full ounce of fuel, it burned for 21 minutes, boiled a pint of water in 7.5 minutes and was still simmering for ten minutes after that. I would suggest a good pot stand to insure there are no spills. Using the stove as a pot stand is feasible but I wouldn't trust my dinner on top of it. :) Better than a pepsi can stove because it does not burn wildly. Better than the Cat can stove because it last longer. One ounce of fuel is good for a meal and clean up. Construction is flawless. Price is reasonable. I carry mine in my Evernew 1.3 liter pot with a pot stand made out of three inch aluminum flashing.

I live in Colorado, home of some of the most beautiful and rugged mountains in North America, I have now used this stove twice at more than 12,500', It works! Simple, light weight, reliable.
I would not want to cook for a large group of hungry hikers with only one of these, but for 2-4 people this stove is a dream.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

From Brian Vargo - The Decagon stove was designed for one reason- durability. In creating the Decagon stove I wanted a stove that could be dropped, stepped on or thrown from a cliff without worry of breaking.  I also wanted it to be all one piece with no moving parts. The stove part functions exactly as the original Triad stove.

To keep the stove from tipping when putting a pot on top, I added a base plate to the bottom for stability. One of the tests we did to confirm that the stove is durable enough, was to drive over the stove with my truck in our parking lot.  No damage was done so I believe I succeeded in creating a durable stove.
