I've used this with the Hexagon 2 Wood Stove over a three-day backpacking trip, and it's worth the small extra weight.
It improves stability by preventing the oven from flattening out slightly under load. The stove has a pressure clip that keeps it together, but I found that the clip could slide out when trying to open the door (I used a safety pin to hold it shut, but I liked the added stability with the base). The base also raises the stove, improving airflow on uneven ground and helping to contain ashes (just be sure to clear the accumulated ashes occasionally to avoid restricting airflow). After several uses it warped slightly, probably from the heat or the surface I placed it on. It does fit in the nylon carrying case with the stove, but snugly.
Pros:
- Adds structural stability
- Improves airflow
- Helps contain ashes
Cons:
- Ashes can accumulate and restrict airflow if not cleared
- Slightly warping if it runs to hot
- Somewhat tight fit in carrying case.
I recommend it for the added stability, improved airflow, and ability to contain ashes.
